The Stand Up Paddleboard School (SUP) operates year round in Santa Cruz at some of the best SUP spots along the entire West Coast. The coastline is part of the Monterey Bay marine sanctuary, which is an area of conservation and beauty, stretching from Santa Cruz, south to Big Sur.
Come try the fastest growing water sport in the world! Richard and his experienced staff offer SUP adventure tours into the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Experience the thrill of gliding on top of the ocean which offers a unique perspective for viewing marine life and a world renowned scenic coastline. As Richard grew up in Santa Cruz his extensive knowledge of the coastline will guarantee you will have the best tour of the area possible.
Here is a breakdown of the costs/packages and what’s included:
Group Lessons
- 2-hour class
- Any subsequent group lesson is $70 per person.
- No more than four students per instructor.
Semi-Private Lesson
- Taught by a Staff Instructor
- 2-3 students per instructor

All equipment (surfboards, SUPs, paddles and wetsuits) is provided during lessons.
Soft boards ranging from 7′ to 12′ are used for beginners. As surfers progress they can graduate to fiberglass longboards, fun shapes, and short boards.
Reservations
Lessons are taught year round and are scheduled by reservation only. We schedule around the ocean tide and swell conditions. If the tide is low enough we teach the lessons at Cowell Beach on the west side of Santa Cruz. If the swell is small and the tide is not low enough for Cowell’s to be surfable, we move the lessons over to the Pleasure Point area on the east side of Santa Cruz. When you schedule a lesson we will give specific directions to where the conditions will be best for the day of your lesson and to meet your instructor.

You can prepay with VISA or MasterCard over the phone. Otherwise, tuition is payable at the time of the lesson. We require that you download the SURF SCHOOL RELEASE FORM (PDF) below, print and fill it out, and turn it in with you at the time of the lesson.
Register early, because classes can fill up fast – especially on weekends, and during the summer. Students will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
